WordPress – How to Embed FLV files

Just found a helpful plugin to display .flv on my blog. It’s another cool addition to having videos on blog without using YouTube. It’s called FLV Embed by Yaosan Yeo. I used it on my Kung Fu Panda post. Easy to use and configure.

The features available are :

  • uses simple, intuitive tags to generate FLV movies for your posts
  • standards compliant: valid XHTML
  • many options are configurable, such as autostart, show/hide control bar, player colour, poster image, full screen button etc.
  • supports text only output for RSS that prompt readers to visit the original post for Flash content
  • supports outputting poster image for RSS if desired
  • accessibility: requires Javascript to display FLV player, but will prompt user to enable Javascript when disabled
  • accessibility: prompt user to download latest Flash player if it is not installed or too old
  • accessibility: no annoying “click to activate” for IE users
  • does not touch your WordPress database at all

How to add it into your blog?
– Download the plugin at FLV Embed site.
– Unzip it and upload to your “wp-content/plugins”
– Activate it in WordPress Plugins admin panel. Done.

How to include it in your post?

That’s all. If you want to do more configuration then go check out the Options available on the site.

Relevant Info:
FLV files as explained on DownloadAtoZ.com. SWF is not the only Flash format. FLV files (Flash Video Files) are a binary file format that delivers “bitmapped” video, limited to one video and one audio stream per file, over the Internet to the Macromedia Flash Player version 7. FLV content may also be associated with SWF files by ActionScript external references. FLV format can also imported into Macromedia Flash Authoring tool. Unlike SWF format, FLV do not have maximum of 16000 frames limitation and ideally for large video file size.

WordPress – How To Customize Permalinks

Just wanted to share my way of getting my permalinks to work on my self hosted WordPress. I am a noob at this. I went through the forum posts regarding permalinks customization and the .htaccess and configuration got me all frustrated, confused and tired. But I found another way to get my permalinks to work but it’s a bit screwed up though if you utilize the calendar widget. Anyway that is history now, for I had Sponkers to show me how to straighten it up. Thanks bro!
Here is how I got my permalinks to work.

Under Options > Permalinks > Common Options > Custom Structure

Just copy and paste this : %postname%

Click Update Permalink Structure and it would prompt you to update your .htaccess file. Scroll all the way down and you will see this :

Copy and paste it into your .htaccess file :
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

If you can’t be bothered with the .htaccess file, just download it here, unzip and upload to your server where you can see wp-admin, wp-content folders.
Download .htaccess file

And you are done. No more glitches if you use the calendar widget.

If you have a better solution, you are always welcome. Oh, and by the way, I can’t seem to get my RSS Feeds to function too. It’s a little perplexing trying to troubleshoot all these. Appreciate all the pointers and advices I can get. Thanks!

New Blog New Playground… with occasional sand in shoes.

If any of you all noticed that my blog layout went haywire or was in default mode… it was because the Theme section was somehow corrupted. I could not choose any other theme except for the Default. No matter how many time I upload the files to overwrite it, changing the folder names, changing the folder permissions to 777 it was still the same. It was frustrating. It might be the cache memory or something, I will never know. I decided to delete the whole blog system from my Control Panel and manually reinstall the new WordPress 2.3. It was easy and because I had been setting up 4 different new blogs for the past week.

There was bunnyfairy.com, sponkers.com, gazeandstare.com and this, abnerd.com.
In the beginning, the setting up intimidated me. All the .php stuff and database creation. Alas, all that was for nothing because the WordPress installation guide was clear and concise. Took me around ten minutes to get everything up and running.

Oh and you guys (gals), might have noticed, I have started to put up some banners on the right side. Honestly, why let it go to waste and everyone’s gotta eat right. And hell, I eat 3 bowls of rice for that matter. That makes me a big eater in someway. Food4Thot, Sponkers and the little Puffin at BunnyFairy would attest to that. Please click on them if you find it interesting. On the Advertlet’s banner, you could also take a survey so I could learn more about my visitors. Just click on the bottom right corner icon.
Click this icon.

Lastly, I like playing with words. Not an expert wordsmith but just enough. Hence the two word games below. It’s an old skool Hangman game from The Free Dictionary and a seven (7) letter Scrabble game. I kinda stole it from The Free Dictionaryand hosted on my own server. Your mission if you wish to accept is to unscramble the words and drag and drop it in the boxes. All seven (7) words. If you are stuck, do what I do, refresh (F5). The words are randoms and repeats but try clearing all of them. If you want it to be on your blog let me know. I would gladly give you the script.
